Sydney Markets engaged SD Environmental Management to assist with the development and implementation of an Environmental Management Plan. This was to ensure compliance and continuous improvement in reducing its environmental impact as part of its commitment to sustainability.

SD Environmental kicked off the project with an initial review of Sydney Markets’ environmental aspects and impacts to determine the environmental risks, legal and contractual obligations. A review of existing improvement plans, objectives and targets was also performed. A gap analysis against ISO 14001 was drafted to ensure the environmental management plan was based on global best practice.

Sydney Markets’ main environmental concerns are the wastes generated by the vendors at the markets as well as the cleaning activities required for operations. The organisation has undertaken initiatives to increase recycling of waste products from 15% to 50% as well as reduced its water consumption by 30%. The challenge of the environmental management plan was therefore to ensure the objectives and targets meet legal compliance and to continue Sydney Markets’ improvement gains towards sustainability.

Outcomes

In discussions with the client, SD Environmental Management recognised an opportunity to integrate the Environmental Management Plan into the existing OH&S management system. The client’s familiarity with the OH&S system and management process was an excellent platform to build the environmental system from. The benefits of this are centralised documentation and information resource for all staff to access. This also means reduced paperwork, reduced auditing costs and time as well as a renewed awareness around safety priorities as the environmental initiatives are introduced. This required a review and update of some of the OH&S system documents and development of new procedures and forms for processes that will exist solely for environmental issues. The combined result is an effective management guide for the organisation.

Implementation of an integrated system requires communication and training across the organisation. SD Environmental developed and delivered workshops with the key stakeholders to ensure awareness, ownership and functionality of the new procedures and processes.

As part of continuous improvement planning, the newly integrated system will have an annual review by the Markets’ management team to include assessing the environmental risks, and checking objectives and targets. SD Environmental will continue to support Sydney Markets as the program rolls out.
